CHINA — KFC China was recently slammed with outraged customers who were denied discounts promised to them on allegedly fake coupons.

The disgruntled chicken lovers, who were denied deals on Super Value Tuesday, stormed the China World Tower quick-service store in Beijing and refused to leave until their demands for discount chicken were met.

fyi_operations7HONG KONG, China — Modest eateries in Hong Kong and Macau have won the ultimate gold star recently, earning Michelin-star ratings.

“On one side you have luxury restaurants and, on the other, local eateries where you can eat very well at a very good price,” said Jean-Luc Naret, director of the Michelin Guides at the launch of the Michelin Guide Hong Kong Macau 2010.

Although there had been some criticism of previous rankings, which seemed to favour high-end restaurants, Naret maintains such complaints weren’t the reason for the variety of restaurants featured in the 2010 Guide. It turns out this year there was a stronger contingent of native judges, with two Chinese reps — one French and one English.

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — The Canadian University of Dubai has announced it will be launching an International Food Safety Centre in hopes of improving food safety and security in the United Arab Emirates.

An article in the Khaleej Times Online presents an interview with Eunice Taylor, the centre’s director and specialist in food safety management through Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP). The Q&A session reveals details about the new centre, its ties to HACCP practices, the benefits of the courses that will be offered and the end goal in terms of regional food safety practices. The launch of the centre is slated for Dec. 10.

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates – The inaugural opening of the French retail market, Auchan, in Dubai’s Dragon Mart mall, is said to have marked the beginning of a food price war in the UAE, according to an October 30 story from arabianbusiness.com.

The market’s debut on Thursday highlighted a new partnership between the Auchan group and Nakheel, a Dubai property development firm. Hypercorp, the new hypermarket division of Nakheel’s Retailcorp portfolio, envisions there will be 15 more Auchan hypermarkets and 40 more supermarkets opening across the Gulf Cooperation Council in the next 10 years.
