HONG KONG, China — Modest eateries in Hong Kong and Macau have won the ultimate gold star recently, earning Michelin-star ratings.
“On one side you have luxury restaurants and, on the other, local eateries where you can eat very well at a very good price,” said Jean-Luc Naret, director of the Michelin Guides at the launch of the Michelin Guide Hong Kong Macau 2010.
Although there had been some criticism of previous rankings, which seemed to favour high-end restaurants, Naret maintains such complaints weren’t the reason for the variety of restaurants featured in the 2010 Guide. It turns out this year there was a stronger contingent of native judges, with two Chinese reps — one French and one English.
