HALIFAX — Halifax Restaurateur Lyndon Hibbert is breathing a sigh of relief after a visit from city officials who told him how to properly zone his restaurant, Caribbean Twist, reports CBC News.

In a report earlier this week, the co-owner of the Jamaican hotspot was told his restaurant wasn’t zoned for foodservice, and he would have to close shop, despite the fact that the year-old eatery had previously been a lunch-time stop.

fyi_operations14HALIFAX — Just as the slow-food movement seems to be gaining steam in Canada, a recent report out of Halifax indicates local food is on the decline in Nova Scotia.

“We do have a pretty good idea that at most, 13 per cent of our food dollars spent in this province go back to Nova Scotia farms. Unfortunately, this percentage has dropped by four per cent in the last 11 years,” reads the joint report released by the Nova Scotia Federation of Agriculture and the Ecology Action Centre. “The good news is, at 13 per cent, we could be eating a lot more locally grown food than we are now — a potential boon for producers.”

HALIFAX — Running a restaurant is hard enough, never mind the kind of bureaucratic red tape Lyndon Hibbert of the Halifax restaurant Caribbean Twist is facing, with news that his building is not zoned for foodservice — a revelation that could lead to the shutdown of his business.

According to a CBC report, since the restaurant had previously been a lunch spot, the co-owner never thought to check the zoning details when he opened just over a year ago.

Located at 1735 Grafton Street, the new location is owned by Grafton Connor, a Halifax-based company that owns several bars and restaurants throughout Nova Scotia, including The Fishermen Restaurant & Grill, The Grafton Street Dinner Theatre and Cheers.
